Viral marketing is based on the same principles as good, old-fashioned word-of-mouth. It's seen as the ultimate
weapon in any marketer's arsenal because it allows us to achieve so much more, on a comparatively smaller budget. And it
can work wonders in creating awareness of your messages.
Do you use a free Web mail service, like those provided by Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail? Chances are, you do, or have done
in the past. You've probably noticed the text advert at the foot that goes out with every message sent. For example,
it'll say, "Personalise your emails with photos, expressive graphics and stationery — sign-up for MSN 10
today..." That's effective enough to attract attention, whilst managing to be unobtrusive. And that's the very
essence of viral marketing — spreading a brand message using word-of-mouth from a few points of dissemination.
Typical techniques include using email, games, video clips and Web site addresses that get forwarded on by
recipients.
